Parachute · Chrome Extension · 13 June 2026
Summary
Parachute backs up your Chrome tabs to your own cloud storage. Your data goes directly to your Google Drive or Dropbox account, or to a local file on your computer. We never see, store, or have access to your tab data. We collect anonymous usage analytics to improve the product. We never collect tab URLs, page content, or any personally identifiable information.
Who we are
Parachute is built by Unspoken, a small independent studio. You can reach us at unspokentools@gmail.com.
What data Parachute accesses
Parachute reads the following information from your browser to create backups:
- Tab URLs
- Tab titles
- Tab group names and colors
- Pinned and collapsed state
- Window structure
This data is used solely to create backup snapshots. It is sent directly from the extension to your own cloud storage (Google Drive and/or Dropbox) or saved as a local file. It is never transmitted to us or to any server we operate.
Incognito windows are never accessed or backed up. This is by design and cannot be changed.
Where your backups go
Backups are sent directly from the extension to your chosen destination:
Uploaded to a “Parachute” folder in your Drive via the Google Drive API. You authenticate with your own Google account.
Uploaded to /Apps/Parachute backup/ via the Dropbox API. You authenticate with your own Dropbox account.
Saved to a subfolder in your Downloads directory via Chrome’s download API.
There is no intermediary server. The extension communicates directly with Google and Dropbox using your own OAuth credentials. We never receive, relay, or store your backup files.
Authentication
Parachute uses standard OAuth to connect to Google Drive and Dropbox. When you connect a provider, you sign in directly with Google or Dropbox -- Parachute never sees your password.
- Google Drive: Parachute can only access files it creates in your Drive. It cannot read, modify, or delete any other files.
- Dropbox: Parachute can only access its own app folder. It cannot see the rest of your Dropbox.
Authentication tokens are stored securely on your device, encrypted by Chrome. No other extension or website can access them.
You can disconnect either provider at any time. Disconnecting removes the token from the extension. Existing backup files in your cloud storage are not deleted.
Analytics
Parachute collects anonymous usage analytics to understand how the product is used and to improve it.
What we collect
- Device information: Operating system, Chrome version, platform architecture, timezone, UI language
- Extension usage: Backup and restore events (frequency, duration, success/failure), which cloud providers are connected, whether local backup is enabled
- Aggregate counts: Number of open tabs, windows, and tab groups at the time of each event
- Settings: Backup schedule mode, frequency, retention limit
- Device name: The name you set for your device in Parachute (defaults to your OS name, e.g. “Mac”)
What we never collect
- Tab URLs or titles
- Page content, cookies, passwords, or form data
- Browsing history
- Cloud account details (email address, account ID, file contents)
- IP addresses (not logged by our analytics provider)
- Any information that could identify you personally
How it works
Analytics are processed by Mixpanel on their EU servers. Each installation generates a random anonymous identifier that cannot be linked to any person, account, or device outside of Parachute. There are no user accounts, no email collection, and no login.
Feedback
Parachute includes a Feedback link that opens a Tally form in a new browser tab. When you click the link, three parameters are pre-filled in the URL: your device name (the label you set in Parachute), the extension version, and your browser user agent string. No data is transmitted unless you click the link. Submitting the form is entirely optional.
Third-party services
Parachute communicates with the following external services:
Google Drive API
Upload, list, download, and delete backup files. Data sent: Backup JSON files (tab URLs, titles, groups). Google Privacy Policy

Permissions
Parachute requests only the permissions it needs to function:
- Read your tabs to capture URLs, titles, and tab groups for backup
- Create tabs and windows to restore backups
- Storage to save your settings and authentication tokens locally
- Schedule backups to run automatic backups on your chosen schedule
- Download files to save local backup files
- Sign in to Google/Dropbox to authenticate with your cloud storage
- Show notifications to alert you about backup failures or successful restores
Parachute also communicates with Google Drive, Dropbox, and Mixpanel (analytics) APIs. It does not access any other websites or page content.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page will be revised accordingly. Continued use of Parachute after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
